How to make Cloud Migration Testing and Implementation more Efficient

Written by Dave Johnston | 1/21/22 8:54 PM

There are multiple dimensions to cloud migration testing: environments, test data, code, test cases, tools, and of course staff. For each of these, there are multiple best practices that need to be followed. Miss just one and the project will be delayed. Miss several and you will be facing a crisis. A few recent examples:

- Test staff with experience across the old and new warehouse as well as the old and new ETL tools

- Understanding that character fields with trailing blanks may or may not be match depending on the warehouses

- Numeric calculations will round differently across warehouses, causing perceived defects

- Migrations involving ETL tools pose additional challenges and solutions on top of the warehouse

We have a saying that “migration projects happen at the speed of testing”. A well-planned cloud migration starts to get code to test teams within weeks of starting, and testing becomes the critical path for the project. When testing delays occur, the whole project is impacted. So when planning your data warehouse migration, include cloud migration specialists with deep experience in the testing techniques required for migrations.
